The Junior Guardian Angels, our early prevention program for children from 7 to 11, teaches values and
instills a sense of purpose.
With so much peer pressure to choose violence as a means of resolving disputes, this program exerts a strong,
positive inuence on the child's development. It teaches each child how to make "correct" choices, and helps
them to recognize that they have talents and interests that are of value.
The program uses a variety of teaching tools - from art projects and puppets to workshops with community
leaders, police and fire departments - all of which foster an appreciation and respect for each child's
neighborhood.
The youngsters develop self-esteem through role-playing, verbal defense skills, and community projects that
give them a sense of purpose.
Children participate through Junior Guardian After-School Club Programs,
including those administered through
the YMCA of Greater New York. Recent grants by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development
have furthered delivering these life-shaping
programs to today's youth.
